review 1: Jackson knows that he's probably getting a bad end of the deal when Mrs. Nelson suggests he runs her late husband's apple farm, and if he does a good enough job, he can keep the orchard. But it's either that or working for a whole summer at the junk yard, which he really doesn't want to do. Besides, it could make a lot of money... it's almost like growing money on trees! But he has to raise 8000$ at least, and Jackson knows nothing about growing apples. He definitely won't be able to do it all alone, but where will he be able to get help?More suspenseful than I imagined it would be. You keep thinking he's doing alright and then you look at the next task to be done and wonder how he is going to make any money at all, nevermind 8000$. A fun read, and look into how difficult ... morefarming can be.Recommended for grades 5 and up.
review 2: This book is a 2013 Rebecca Caudill nominee for children's literature. This story takes place in the early 80s and is narrated by Jackson Jones, a seventh grader who agrees to rehab and care for an elderly neighbor's apple orchard. If he is successful and rises $8000 to pay her for the trees, he will get the deed on the property. Jackson has no experience with farming or raising apples and enlists the help f his siblings and cousins.I learned a lot about apples.I enjoyed the narration-- Hawkins (a scientist, by the way) tell the story easily and fluidly, and the voice he uses is true to that of an adolescent boy. Parts were slow, but not lethargic. I would definitely recommend this book to tweens and teens, and the adults who teach them :) less

This is not necessarily a great book, but it is a cute story.
