Night Diver

Written by Elizabeth Lowell

I can’t believe it’s been a month since I’ve reviewed a book!  Never fear, I’ve been reading the whole time.  I think I got out of sync because I did the thing where I was reading several books at once and just couldn’t finish any of them.  But I’m not sure why I haven’t reviewed this book yet.  It was a total guilty pleasure book that I definitely did not struggle to finish.

What It’s About

I would consider this book to be a Romance.  There’s adventure thrown in, sure.  But Night Diver tells the story of Kate, a finance whiz who heads back to the Caribbean to help her brother and grandfather save the family business.  They’re divers and treasure hunters, which is always fun.  The problem is that the British think Kate’s family is stealing artifacts, so they send an investigator at the same time.  A tall, dark, handsome, mysterious investigator.  I think you get the gist.

The Good

I read this book after finishing a pretty heavy non-fiction piece.  It was exactly what I was looking for…a literary amuse bouche, if you will.  It had all the components of a good romance (I’m trying to refrain from saying “guilty pleasure” again).  It had the damaged yet tough female lead.  The strong male character who, despite his own demons, is exactly what our heroine needs.  The setting is fantastic.  I mean, treasure hunting in the tropics?  Let’s call it a modern day Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Not-So-Good

Sure, Night Diver has all the components of a good romance, but it’s pretty formulaic.  There was not a single thing about this book that took me by surprise.  On the one hand, that can be like snuggling up in ratty pj’s on a rainy evening.  But, as a reader, it was the kind of book that made me skim some pages because I knew what was coming.

My biggest issue with this book is going to sound really crazy.  But here goes.  I feel like the minute Kate and Holden met, they thought about and talked about sleeping together.  There was zero build up.  There was no “will they or won’t they” tension.  I know, I know.  It’s a romance.  Clearly something was going to happen.  But at least try for some mystery.  And if you’re not, then just get it over with and give me lots of hot, steamy sex the whole time.

Final Thoughts

It was a fun book to read as a break.  But I can understand why it was in the bargain book section at Barnes & Noble.
