review 1: Though the ostensible main character fell into the almost-retired-captain-with-a-bad-knee category, this book starts out a very original blend of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. There were a lot of unique touches, particularly with setting, and solid, fast-paced writing to keep things moving. This unfortunately made it all the more frustrating as the narrative lost its focus on the unique elements and became quite predictable, particularly with the cliched ending. Not to give anything away, but it felt like the obligatory Hollywood finale rather than an ending actually made for this book. Add to this the mixed success in characterizing the main protagonists and some allegedly frightening behavior (a guy flattening his face up against a glass window) that came across ... moreas more ridiculous and childish than anything else and a book that began enthralling ends up rather average.
review 2: You learn as the main character learns and the scary bits often outweigh the learning bits. The character is cool - a starship hero set out to pasture to monitor the decommissioning of a space station orbiting a purple anomaly star. The plot is similar to the movie, The Ring, where when you watch the video, you die. In this instance, something came out of subspace and it is not friendly and people who come into contact with the strangeness disappear. When the captain tries to find out what happened to his friends and crew, their lives have been erased just like his record. It all ties together because in the beginning it is difficult to see how, but the author does a great job of making it seem real. I liked it a lot and read it really fast - but only during the day. less

A bloody creepy book that keeps you guessing, and a satisfying conclusion tying up loose ends nicely.

A little confusing at first, but what can you expect from supernatural science fiction?

I wasn't a fan of the writing style and could not get connected to the story line.
