New Book – The Playdate by Louise Millar (Pages 1 – 53)

Publishing year: 2012

This book is told from three perspectives: Callie’s, Suzy’s, and Debs’.

Callie and Suzy are best friends. Callie is a mother to Rae and she is struggling with being a single mum. Her little girl was born with a heart condition, and her husband divorced her a while ago. Callie feels lonely as none of the other mothers in the neighbourhood try to befriend her, except for Suzy. From the first chapter we learn that Callie has a secret she keeps from her friend, but later the secret turns out not to be so huge. Callie’s secret is that she is going back to work as a sound artist, which doesn’t sit well with Tom, her ex-husband, who thinks that she should stay with Rae all the time.

Suzy is American, but she moved to England because her husband Jez is English. At first sight her life seems to be harmonious and perfect. Suzy has three sons, two of whom are twins, she has no financial problems, and her husband looks like the ideal partner. Yet, not everything is blissful. For some reason Jez avoids his wife’s romantic passes, and instead since he returned from Canada after some business dealings, he has been out every night with a colleague. The problem is that Suzy wants another child, a little girl, but Jez might not want more children, and that could be the problem. I think that Suzy fears that she and Jez might be on the brink of divorce, and she keeps mentioning a phone call which will make things easier. Who does she intend to call and why?

The third woman in the triangle is Debs, a forty-eight-year-old woman, who has just moved next door to Suzy. From the first moment we can see that Debs is not right in her head. She has these obsessions, hating any disruptions like the noise that neighbours make or any visits. We learn that Debs has married recently, and her husband Allen seems like a good man. Debs is really creepy, so I don’t know what Allen has seen in her. I have a bad feeling that Debs could do something to Rae. Callie and Rae dropped by to welcome her to the street, and Debs begrudged the interruption, but she hid it skilfully. Rae, the little girl, didn’t seem taken by this woman, and to Callie’s embarrassment her daughter uses an old doll that Debs gave her to hit the older woman in the nose. It seems that Rae is clever and has seen through the woman. I just hope that Rae doesn’t come to harm as I fear.

Interesting, but quite creepy beginning. I can’t wait to see what will happen with these three women and the children.
