review 1: I really wanted to love this book as much as The Land of Stories series, the Grimm Legacy series and Sisters Grimm. I started the book with high expectations coming from seeing the author present at a school. He was passionate about fairy tales and his storytelling was engaging so I decided to pop open the book over the holiday. The premise is unique because unlike the above similar books, the author is sticking to the original, twisted Grimm tales which are bloody, violent and just bizarre. I was curious to read the real tale of Hansel and Gretel as that was the book's focus. I think what makes this book successful is the addition of the modern narrator commenting on the stories talking to the reader. However, I felt like it read like a never ending story. It kept goin... moreg and going and going and I had to force myself to finish. I really didn't like the book, but it did come together finally at the end. Not a book I would have in my school collection because it's too bloody and violent in a more disgusting way than popular fiction is. I didn't enjoy it but appreciate the author's attempt at brining the "real" fairy tales to light. Perhaps there could be a book discussion guide at the end of the book?
review 2: A Tale Dark and Grimm is about Hansel and Gretel, whose story was later (by the brothers Grimm) separated into (about) eight stories. Adam Gidwitz's novel is an incredible twist on a few original and classic fairytales, ones you think you know... A strange but entertaining narrator tells the story, occasionally stopping the story and wondering why something happened the way it did, or giving a warning when something scary is about to happen. Although A Tale Dark and Grimm is stupendous, it is very gory and bloody. This is a children's book, and all the gory and bloody stuff is happening to children, which may make the book even more disturbing. It is up to you to decide whether to read this book. Despite what it may seem, A Tale Dark and Grimm teaches excellent life lessons, and shows the power of forgiveness. less
