review 1: I got to page 31 and saw this:Plants "even possess a form of intelligence: bananas and oranges connected to lie-detecting polygraphs have been shown to respond to mathematics questions in experiments by Dr. Ken Hashimoto and Cleve Backster. Asked how much two plus two is, the plants emit a hum that forms into four peaks when translated into ink tracings."What.No.How can I take seriously a book that has this crap in it? Still, I decided to read on and just accept that the author doesn't understand... anything, really, about how the natural world works. It's still nicely written and gives me ideas about where to direct my own curiosity about fruits I can't find in the supermarket.Two short chapters later (I know it was two because I asked this really smart basil seedling I h... moreang out with), I got to a part where he refers to Roman vomitoriums as the room Romans used for puking so they could eat more food. I don't expect everyone to know that this is a historical myth, but another blatant (to me) and unnecessary error so soon after the first just finished me off. The camel's back is broken; I'll move on to better books.
review 2: I was about to give the book 5 stars - it enhanced my knowledge of fruits like no other. However those chapters on fruit freaks /zealots weren't that much interesting, frankly. Cut them, and the book would've been perfect. But whom should I blame for this - not for nothing the book is named Fruit Hunters, not just Fruits. All in all a good read, just skip some chapters if you're into fruits rather than in some peculiar human beings ;) less
