review 1: What is this book? The opening chapter is interesting: seal convicts on an asteroid, give them air scrubbers, food and drills, get them to make their own homes within asteroid. This is a novel concept. And then it gets gory, giving a new meaning to 'body suit' (I won't go into details for those of delicate dispositions, but think 'silence of the lambs' and those 'darts'). Now, if you are going to write scifi, it's good to have the 'fi', but you also need the 'sci' to be accurate otherwise geeks reading it will go "no, that wouldn't work". And whilst the plot of the book is fine, multilevelled, and with some colourful characters, the science grates. I'm not convinced about the 'faster than light' time travel, and I don't think the gun works: even at the level of a few atoms... more, accelerating them even to sublight speeds would increase their mass ridiculously. Hence the three stars. This is in no way a poor book, just needed better research!
review 2: A lot of hard sci-fi or even fun sci-fi is not that clever or well-written. Not saying it's BAD, but a lot of it is cookie-cutter and fun to read without having to do a lot of thinking. Jack Glass is a very good book, both in terms of writing and the unique way it is presented. It is a story of three individual "locked-room" mysteries that all tie together, moving from one to the next without necessarily telling you how or why they are connected. The eponymous Jack Glass is the main character one moment, then not the next, but the other character of Diana is perhaps more intriguing. The biggest praise I have for this novel is how he explains the realities of his science-fiction world. You are served with terms like MOHsister and worldtual with little to no context, but as the story progresses you figure out what they mean on your own. When I reached the glossary in the back, I found I didn't need it to understand what these terms meant, which to me is the sign of a gifted storyteller that is able to subtly envelop you in their world without having to stop and explain what everything means. It was a lot of fun to read, and I'm glad I picked it up. less
