review 1: The frontispiece of this book has a quote from Michiko Kakutani's review in the NY Times which raves that this novel is: "Dark, dazzling... the debut of an enormously talented writer." What is masked by those points of ellipsis is the phrase "and deeply flawed." Yes: deep, deep, deep flaws. Some really great writing here (a hike from hell set in Kauai is a standout) is spoiled by lots of meta-mindbending and passages of outright misogyny. But the author does get a few extra points for mentioning in passing two books that once upon a time were important to me: Italo Calvino's "Invisible Cities" and Piers Anthony's "Split Infinity," of all things.

The plots twists, the characters each dealing with their own dark marriage issues, all revolving around a death that could have been murder or suicide. I was riveted - I want to read it again to see what I missed. less
