review 1: I really enjoyed this. It's a young adult book by virtue of the protagonist being young, but perfectly readable for adults as well. Beautifully written, engaging - I'd call the genre "supernatural music school story" because each element is equally important: it's a coming-of-age tale in which singing, eerie creatures, troubled pasts, and the burdens of family carried into a new environment are all central elements. Highly recommended.

And the music/opera elements were just stunning, written with so much passion and knowledge! This was an artfully written novel with a plot that completely engaged me-- I read this in one sitting.
