Travelling when you have allergies

I know for myself at least I worry when I travel because there’s always the chance I’ll get served food that could cause me an allergic reaction or on planes the thought of someone opening a packet of nuts that could send me into anaphylactic shock. So theres a few steps I take to make sure I feel as comfortable as I can.

  • Let the cabin crew know
Make sure if you’re flying to let the cabin crew know that you have an allergy and ask them to make an announcement if possible or necessary so other passengers know. This allows the cabin crew to make a note and not sell any of the item on board ( eg. if you have a nut allergy they won’t sell packets of nuts and such.
  • Wear a medical ID bracelet
If you’re travelling alone these are especially helpful as if anything does happen it may help anyone trying to help you figure out whats happening and how to respond. There are so many styles of these there’s something for everyone and they are personalisable so you can make it perfect just for you.
  • Learn how to communicate your allergy in their language
It’s great hoping everyone speaks english but realistically some things can’t be understood as well when you’re not speaking someones mother-tongue so just simply learn to say ” I have a ______ allergy” in the language of the country you’re travelling to and possibly something that may help clarify it. Allergy Action provide free online printable flashcards in many languages.
  • Take your medication with you
As ridiculous as it may sound just remember to take your epi-pens or such with you as they are an essential if you do have a reaction and can save lives. In some situations also they can help people understand the severity of the allergy or help people understand the precautions that need taking.
  • If travelling with people or when you meet people let them know
It may seem obvious but it can be easily overlooked by making assumptions that people already know these things so don’t forget to remind them just in case. And when meeting people I fully understand it’s not the easiest thing to slide into conversation but if going for a meal or eating street food just give them a simple heads up.

Theres just a few little tips to get you started and to allow you to plan ahead a little with what to expect and how to deal with a few situations. If you have any suggestions or comments don’t be afraid to let me know them.

    Until next time, Aurora.
