review 1: The illustration of the front cover is what caught my eyes when I was in the bookstore, so I bought the book and gave it a go.It’s about a girl named Amanda and one day she ends up having an imaginary friend named Rudger and they become the very best of friends. Then one day someone appears on their doorstep, a man named Mr Bunting, who strangely has an imaginary friend of his own, a dark looking girl. Amanda’s mother registers him as creepy and tells him to go. Rudger’s life turns around when Amanda goes into an accident and his existence is then threatened. He learns of who Mr Bunting is actually is from other “deserted” imaginaries and will do whatever it takes to be by Amanda’s side again. It was a good book, I liked the illustrations a lot. It’s a childre... moren’s book though I find that it seems better suited for a middle schooler. I did come across some words that a child would probably never say and there is some dark and mature themes such as loss.A quite likable aspect in this story is Amanda’s mum, Lizzie. She doesn’t think Amanda’s imaginary friend is a sign that she’s becoming abnormal, if anything she goes along with it acting as if Rudger was actually there. I think this was nice because kids and imaginary friends are a normal thing and one way or the other, we grow out of it. In contrast to Amanda’s friend’s parents who got all anxious and tried getting their child to see a psychiatrist. In this book we could also see that some kids would be friendly with their imaginary or bossy to them. And we can also see that it’s never to old to imagine. A beautiful story with beautiful illustrations.
review 2: This book is a cute middle grade reader about an imaginary boy, Rudger, who is created to live with his friend, Amanda. The story follows their friendship as a strange man shows up at the door and can also see Rudger. (Of course, no one can see him except Amanda, as he is invisible.) This mysterious man then shows up at random times trying to harm the pair. This is an adorable, heartfelt story about friendship and the imagination. It chronicles what a person would do for their friend and how important it is to have faith in friendship. less

Compelling, scary, yet wonderfully warm - the link between an imaginary and his/her child.

What an intensely creepy book for 9-12 year olds. Even I found the drawing dark....

I loved every moment of this, through every funny, moving and downright scary part.

Adorable. That was adorable. And reminiscent of Coraline, to be sure.
