review 1: Myriam eröffnet nach 6 Jahren ziellosen Herumirrens ein kleines Restaurant in Paris. Doch der Anfang gestaltet sich schwierig, hat Myriam doch sehr eigene Vorstellungen von ihrem Lokal. Nach und nach beeindruckt die Inhaberin jedoch ihre Gäste mit ihrer Eigenartigkeit und Phantasie und das Restaurant wird zu einem beliebten Treffpunkt des Viertels. Dennoch scheint Myriam nicht glücklich, immer noch hadert sie mit ihrer Vergangenheit…Ich habe mich schwer getan mit dem Buch, obwohl mich die Geschichte und der Klappentext sehr angesprochen haben. Zum einen spielt der Roman im Hier und Jetzt, und das Restaurant bildet den Mittelpunkt des Geschehens. In Rückblenden erfährt man dann nach und nach von der Vergangenheit Myriams, ihrer Familie und den Umständen, warum sie d... moreieses Lokal eröffnet. Dabei verliert sich die Geschichte oft in Kleinigkeiten und Nebensächlichkeiten, und der rote Faden droht manchmal zu verschwinden. Der Schreibstil, den ich als abgehackt und gehetzt empfunden habe, unterstützt noch dieses Abschweifen vom Thema, dadurch wird der Roman für mich wirklich anstrengend zu lesen. Eigentlich passiert in der ganzen Geschichte nicht viel, sie lebt von der Gedankenwelt Myriams und den Rückblenden in ihre Vergangenheit. Dabei kann ich sie ganz oft nicht verstehen und ihre Handlungen nicht nachvollziehen. Myriam wird mir daher auch im Laufe des Romans nicht wirklich sympathisch. Auch die anderen Figuren sind sehr skurril und eigen, einzig Tanja, die erst auf den letzten Seiten auftaucht, ist mir sympathisch in ihrer standhaften und selbstsicheren Art.Letztlich war ich froh, als ich das Buch endlich beendet habe, nochmal würde ich es sicher nicht lesen. Schade – denn der Inhalt hatte für mich sehr vielversprochen geklungen.
review 2: I think sometimes we review books based on the actual merits of the book...is the grammar correct? Do they use the words cold and hard to describe the main character 500 times too many? Are the sentences perfectly formed or can a high school student create more interesting sentences and plot devices? But sometimes there are certain books that we love because they speak to us. We relate on some level with the characters in the story. It's subjective and unquantifiable. Yes the book is written well, but goshdarnit I totally get what the characters are thinking, what they are going through, what they want, what they dream and what they fear. I relate to Myriam on so many levels, her thought processes, the way she feels about the inevitability of the consequences of life, I have loved who I shouldn't and haven't loved who everyone thought I should. I may not like everything about her. I may even be uncomfortable with the nature of her sins. In fact i think its the only drawback of the story...it was so difficult to get past her ultimate sin even though the revelation is only dwelled on for maybe 5 pages. But I hear her inner thoughts, her pain, her doubt, her confusion, her joy and I felt like I was reading my own. I loved Myriam's voice and in the end this is why I loved the book. This may be subjective, but I think it also smacks of damn good writing. less
