review 1: this is actually a 2.5 star rating - some of these were really interesting stories. i liked how literal her writing was, and then all of a sudden a shot of metaphor, hugely vivid imagery, out of nowhere. some of these didn't work for me at all - i ended up skimming or skipping them altogether. the title story is definitely the strongest. the very first one was alluding to sexual violence, though, which i did not appreciate. does it have to be present in everything??
review 2: I am a fan of Aimee Bender's writing, and this collection did not disappoint. There are stories in this collection that previously appeared in great venues like The Paris Review, One Story, Ploughshares and Tin House. Bender creates her stories using what I call "the one weird thing" that
... moreaffects the normalcy surrounding it. That "weird thing" can result in a wide range of stories from subtle ("Americca") to bizarre ("Tiger Mending"). less

Don't quite get all the stories. The darkness of the stories almost caught you off-guard.

This was a random pick for me and a super great surprise.

Very strange, but it grew on me as the stories went on.
