review 1: The first part is a detailed depiction of one Indian immigrant family's tragedy as seen through the eyes of the younger of two sons, but the hurried account of his adult life in the latter part spoils the effect to some extent. The strongest part of this book is seeing the younger son grow up against the backdrop of his older brother's accident; his reactions are at times immature and yet insightful. The author depicts all the family members with a clear eye and brutal honesty and paints a sensitive picture of what happens to a family that doesn't give up, even when they most want to.

... morehumpa Lahiri but Family Life is a far cry away. As one tragic incident unfolded into the next, I kept waiting for it to turn around, and only realized with about 20 pages left in the book that it was going to end morosely and somewhat abruptly. Definitely not a feel good book, nor does it really even speak to the broader immigrant experience at large. less
