review 1: Great compilation! The greatest asset of this book is that it introduces so many characters who are less known in the Marvel universe. Each page is dedicated to another hero/antihero and the author tells us about the characters' powers, backgrounds etc. I think it's a great read for someone who is only starting their journey with Marvel, or someone who knows a lot about the popular characters, but wants to learn about the less popular ones. Btw my favourite character has to be Jarvis, who seems to be Marvel's Alfred Pennyworth. The book says that he doesn't really have any special abilities, however he is a world class expert in vacuuming and removing stains from other galaxies. Nice. ;)
review 2: Alternate title could be the "book of real superheros and their
... morerejects," this book profiles many superheros, some more illustrious than others. It ranks them in various categories from 1-7. Some of the many wonderful superheroes you can find in this book include:Ant-Man, whose powers allow him to shrink to any size and control ants all while retaining his normal human strength. On a scale of 1-7 he has a speed rating of "2."Arachne, part of a Canadian government team who feels vibrations through surfaces the same way spiders do. She has an intelligence rating of "2."Baron Von Blitzschlag, once thought to have no superpowers, he can in fact generate small amounts of electrical energy.Big Bertha, a 750 pound woman whose alter ego is a runway model, she can increase her bulk to massive proportions and shape her body fat to her whim. She has a rating of 2 on both intelligence and speed scales.Charlie 27, who is genetically adapted to live on Jupiter (isn't Jupiter a ball of gas?) and is a skilled pilot. Wow. Dinah Soar, a part of the "Great Lakes Avengers" can fly and has a hypersonic voice that only Mr. Immortal can hear (the two became romantically involved). Dinah Soar was tragically killed during a fight with the rogue inhuman, Maelstrom.Doorman, a mutant teleporter who can open gateways into the Darkforce Dimension, but can only use it to benefit others by teleporting them into the next room. He was a founding member of the Great Lakes Avengers.Egghead, a 5'7" 320 pound criminal scientist who creates robots and "mind controlling limbs." He can also cause comas.Flatman, (another Great Lakes Avenger) is an astrophysicist who possesses a thin, 2-dimensional body that can stretch and be molded into a variety of shapes. He can never do anything other than 2-dimensional. Flatman's teammates once thought he had died fighting Maelstrom but it turns out he had just turned sideways due to the embarrassment of losing his clothes in a fight.Henry Peter Gyrich, the government liaison with the Avengers who has no superpowers, but is an excellent planner, as evidenced by the fact that he trimmed down the Avengers to a manageable seven member team. When it was revealed that he helped cover up the death of MVP, he retired.Jarvis, a former boxing champion and pilot, is the butler for the Avengers becoming a world-leading authority on removing stains from furniture and carpets.Ka-zar, who has an empathy with wild animals and is an expert at handling them.Living Laser, who is composed entirely of light, he creates holographic images targeted to a specific person.Mantis, who had contact with alien sentient plants, she communicates telepathically with plants and sense their emotions.Marvel Boy, whose saliva causes anyone it touches to have hallucinations.Master Pandemonium who controls an army of demons living inside his body and can emit magical fire from his mouth.Mole Man, who has a heightened sense of smell, can control many underground inhabitants. I'm assuming that the profiles of these lame superheros are tongue-in-cheek. If not, then I should have given the book 3 stars instead of 4.My 6-year-old and I had a great time reading this book together. less
