The Ask and The Answer is the sequel to The Knife of Never Letting Go. Being a sequel it has a lot to live up to, especially given how amazingly well done the first book was, and this book definitely lived up to the hype! It has the same unpredictable writing that keeps the reader on their toes and paying attention over every page. And following on from the shock ending of the first book it absolutely did not disappoint.
As the first book ends we are left with the images of Todd carrying Viola down the hill towards Haven, a place they hope will be safe from Mayor Prentiss. However, as they finally reach the town they are met not with the help of the townspeople but the cold and uncaring Major Prentiss. The Ask and The Answer follows on from this point, detailing what happens to poor Todd and Viola as they deal with being captured by the Major, and the aftermath the town goes through having forcibly had a leadership change.
Just as with the first book the characters are written with great depth and complexity and just as you think you’ve figured someone out a curve ball is thrown again. This book is definitely worth reading, but of course only if you’ve already read the first one!
