review 1: Dear Lord, what a fantastic book. The worldbuilding, the characterisation, the politics and narrative and backstory and whole plot, this book is a tour-de-force that doesn't condescend to its audience and, at a time when everyone is trying their hand at something akin to the Hunger Games - dystopia, utopia, futuristic societies and such, you know - this book shines like a beacon from the bay of Palmares Tres and offers hope to the people reading YA today. This book isn't trying to be like any other book, I should say. It is a wonderful diamond in the rough that I would thoroughly recommend to everyone.
review 2: I strongly disliked what I read of this book (into the Fall section). I finally gave up because I couldn't understand the city these characters lived i
... moren. I did not like the egocentric main character. I was wholly underwhelmed by her 'art'. (She makes a tree of lights on her skin and that's supposed to help cause some kind of revolution?). I had a hard time with the idea that these were out all night hanging out with a doomed king, supposedly doing subversive art projects, engaging in promiscuous sex or (lol) public masturbation, then I guess going to school during the day. That is, when they weren't cutting class to plan a revolution, talking to the queen about some contest, or saving a quadrant of the city from being squashed by some gigantic robotic spider? The language was way too confusing for me as well, which actually kinda embarrasses me. Instead of making me feel more a part of the life if the story it simply alienated me even further. And why in the world would a father choose to die and abandon his young daughter? I don't even feel like this book should be dubbed a YA book. To be snotty and reference another author who I kept thinking about while reading this, China Mieville's book Embassytown, which among other things also had a revolution and a female protagonist, is a much more worthwhile read than this mess. I don't know why I keep trying to read these types of YA books. I don't care how many of them are best seller's, I strongly dislike them all. Thanks for allowing me to rant. less

I really enjoyed the combination of the uber-tech with the primitive, in particular. Great read.

I couldn't get into this, I read about a third of the book. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood?

I didn't really get this book, but yet I still managed to predict the ending.
