Everyone has their own idea of what it looks like to be successful. We’ve spent a significant amount of time on here discussing it as well. However, I feel like it is a topic that really cannot get enough coverage. Because everyone defines it differently but also has a tendency to base their definition on what those around them are doing, a feeling of failure often floods our minds. We see what we perceive as success going on in the lives of those around us, quickly realize that we are not at that level and decide that success has somehow evaded us. You feel like you are not succeeding. Do not do this to yourself, your emotions will fail you.
This is unfair.
Dr. Henry Cloud reminds us that “there are a lot of definitions of success, and I am not trying to tell you which definition you should adopt. What I am saying here is that all of these people in my deja vu experience tended to accomplish success in love and life in the ways that they defined success. They moved forward. They did not stay stuck, repeating the same mistakes over and over again. They reached their goals and found what they were looking for in life.”
As Dr. Cloud has shown us, success is simply moving forward from one point to the next. Whatever goal you have set in front of you presents you with an opportunity for success if you simply move towards it. Now, since we all have different goals and we all have different stories, our success with not be the same. If your goal is to raise up obedient children who contribute well to society but you do not accumulate wealth in the process, you are still successful. Or, maybe you have decided against the family life and want to throw yourself fully into a career. Whatever level of success that you set for yourself there can easily be reached (with hard work) and should not be compared to the success of those around you.
In these regards, you truly do live in a bubble. You are an island. The only person that you need to compare yourself to is the person that you want to be. You will have setbacks along the way. That’s alright, we all do. Keep moving forward. The only thing that is unacceptable in this process is talking about what you want but sitting still.
Life is Strange. Live it Well.
