review 1: I wish I had this book as a kid! The content and color illustrations in this oversized book are amazing. While not every country is covered, the major ones are detailed in an informative and appealing format. These maps could be used to find particular details or a child could just browse through the book over and over to look at all the information available. The inside cover shows an overview of the world and details what pages students should look at for particular information. There is no index or glossary, but the back several pages of the book display the beautiful flags of the world. Each country page includes details like the country name, flag, capital, language, what the country calls itself, population, size, the most popular names given to people, traditi... moreonal clothing, popular foods, famous people, and throughout the map city names, rivers, mountains, interesting landmarks, animals, and activities. While each two-page country spread is very busy with information it is fascinating information.
review 2: This map book is a "visual feast" indeed - and although I am a grown person and was asked somewhat incredulously why I'd be buying such a book for myself (um, because I love maps and this book is delightful?), I would be very eager to share with any friends' kids who come to my home. The 52 maps that ARE included easily draw you in and stimulate curiosity and imagination. The only bummer is that such a small fraction of the globe is covered, and it's mostly the usual suspects that are highlighted. For instance, Jordan alone represents the entire Middle East *and* all the 'stans. How did we lose out on a Turkey, or Iran, or Syria, or Afghanistan? As long as you don't expect anything comprehensive, though, what is included is just lovely. less

Visually interesting with lots of details. Fun to browse; there's no place name index.
