review 1: I was ready to give up on the constantly-rebooting Secret Avengers title, but I heard enough good things about Kot's run that I decided to give it a try ... and I'm glad I did. What we have here isn't quite Fraction's Hawkeye, but it's clearly in the same wheelhouse, with non-traditional storytelling, humor, and deep characterization. We also get some fun, secretive espionage. Overall, a terrific comic; too bad it's already going away!The Infinite Comic that finishes things off isn't nearly as good. In fact, it's a little incomprehensible, and not in a good way, so consider my rating for the main arc of #1-5 only.
review 2: Secret Avengers continues Marvels recent trend of humorous, lighthearted and more importantly, fun B titles. Ales Kot previously worked on ... moresome issues when Nick Spencer was writing the title but i haven't read those issues so i don't know how it compares. The team in this current series is comprised of Maria Hill, Nick Fury Jr, Phil Coulson, Hawkeye, Spider-Woman, Black Widow and surprisingly M.O.D.O.K.Phil Coulson's character in this book is a highlight as Kot writes him as interesting and by the looks of it is about to use him to explore Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (which hopefully is treated with a more serious approach). Hawkeye is pretty much the Hawkeye we're familiar with from Fractions run with the character.Michael Walsh's art and Matt Wilson's colours work well together, Walsh in particular deserves credit for not drawing Natasha or Jessica like they're posing for an underwear shoot. less
