review 1: Set in the year 2002 in a Parisian International high school Will Silver, a 30 something English teacher first appears as a popular, charismatic educator who engages his students in political, religious and moral debates tied to literature by Camus and Sartre. He tells his students that each individual gets out of literature something very different than the next person because of what they bring to the text; their history and experiences. As a former high school English teacher and mother of a 15 year old daughter I did just that. I enjoyed the chapters of in depth classroom discussions of life and literature, but Will lost all my respect when he embarked on a sexual affair with a student. I'm not sure how anyone could find his behavior excusable on any level. I hate to ... morespoil the ending but what this teacher "deserved" is not what he got.
review 2: Though I knew exactly what this book was about and knew that it was somewhat based on the real life events of Alexander Maksik, I was still stunned by how good of a story this was and how well it was written. Though the student teacher affair is what propels the story and is eventually what leads to Silver's downfall, I really enjoyed that the book didn't focus solely on that aspect and instead, gave insight to other areas of the character's lives. Gilad was an interesting character to read and Silver as well; Marie was a little annoying in her childishness. But because all the characters were so realistic, I admired how true to them Maksik stayed throughout the story. less
