review 1: A beautiful play that is reminiscent of the courtly love plays, which also includes a character that is a reminiscent of ‘La Celestina” as well. They first pages make you feel that it is a love comedy, but the end of it turns to be a tragedy. Alfred de Musset used a very poetic and beautiful language in his play; unfortunately, he had to make too many changes to its contents and elements in order to meet the strict demands of the censorship of the time. What is most painful in the play is the misunderstanding that occurs when Coerlio thinks that Octave was deceiving him (When Marianne was calling Coerelio by the name of Octave), which is not true. He died very sad because of this misunderstanding/imagined betrayal. Octave does not know about that at all, and shows dee... morep fondness and love toward his best friend Coerlio. On the other hand, we see that Marriane, who seemed innocent and pure at the beginning of the play shows changes in her moods and character in the end when she begins to admire Octave, and resists her husband the dull magistrate in an assertive way, showing him that she is not a puppet in his hands.
review 2: I liked this play! There was some good "coq-à-l'ane" (what is it in English? It's something Shakespearean.) I much preferred Octave to Cœlio, although I think the reader/spectator was supposed to like Cœlio better because he is a romantic, a dreamer (and we know what I think of French Romantics now...) Les Caprices de Marianne was my favorite of the French Romantic books I read for this class. It reminded me so strongly of Junior Year French. I feel like Madame Caster would have done a great job teaching this book! less
