review 1: I stumbled across Ali Shaw's first novel a year or so ago and have been waiting to read his second. I loved both! I need a little bit of magic in my life from time to time and Ali Shaw's novels deliver. As grown up fairy tales there is an innocence about the narrative that is endearing but the story isn't without bite. Shaw addresses family conflict as well as looking at the dangers of 'NIMBYism' when it runs wild. The enduring motif of redemption through sacrifice also plays a part lending the story a religious quality separate from the somewhat pointless variety of church religiousity shown in the book.The landscape and weather are as much characters as any of the people in the story and for me, Shaw's descriptions are a highlight. Maybe there is a film in the making wit... moreh this one???
review 2: Wahnsinn! Ali Shaw ist eine Entdeckung. Sein Debüt hatte mich schon gefangen genommen und das gleiche ist ihm mit diesen Buch auch gelungen.Ich werde ein Gewitter wohl nie mehr einfach so sehen können. Poetischerweise beginnt es gerade zu regnen...Ich bin froh, dass es Shaw gelingt moderne Märchen zu schreiben. Manchmal wünschte ich mir ein paar mehr Informationen...aber nun gut.Einziges Manko am Buch: Es sterben zu viele Tiere! less
