review 1: I'm new to reading BASS, so I don't have the advantage of comparing Sebold to other editors, but I was struck by how these stories seemed to be all over the map, quality-wise. "Modulation" and "Into the Gorge" were sock-knockers. But I was underwhelmed by the "experimentation" going on in many of the other stories, which seemed either out-of-date, irrelevant, or better suited for nonfiction. I'm looking at you "Magic Words" and "Peripatetic Coffin."
review 2: Maybe I just wasn't in the mood, but I found this collection kind of...dull. Nothing really lept out at me as something bold or new or unexpected, with that little frission of finding something amazing, which was disappointing since I expect more from Sebold. On the other hand, I think she should have s... moreelected the essay collection, not the fiction collection, as I find her a much stronger nonfiction writer, but nobody asked me! Oh well. less
