review 1: This is a very good book for anyone interested in learning about or wanting to become a vegan. I was non-vegan reading the book at the time, and I found it helpful with gaining the knowledge that is needed (regarding lifestyle, food, vitamins, etc.) to trasition into veganism. I do like how Alicia has her three levels, and I had been "flirting" at the time of reading this. This book is great for anyone who is starting out, or also, interested in gaining new recipes. This is a great window for someone to look through to see a different lifestyle of compassion and health. It's worth looking into what Alicia say about veganism even if you aren't going to be overly committed to macrobiotics.
review 2: This book was clearly written with good intentions, but fall
... mores short of the mark compared with other similar volumes. The first half or so of the book discusses why a vegan diet is beneficial both to the person and to the planet. Not bad information, but it has been presented far better in other books, such as Thrive Foods. The Kind Diet provides the wikipedia short version, easily digestible but without much depth.As a recipe book, it also lacks depth, there being very little variety in the type of recipes presented. They all seem very similar. For instance, almost every recipe uses shoyu (soy sauce) and some form of umeboshi plum. These may be Alicia's favorite recipes. That is fine. But if a person is going to create a recipe book for sale, he/she should include many different types of recipes with different flavors. Her recipes also tend to be bland. She believes that spices aren't calming, and shouldn't be used much. This view makes little sense. Numerous spices have been shown to have enormous health benefits, and none of them have been shown to cause any sort of systemic inflammation. And, so importantly, spices add to the sensations of fullness and satisfaction, so a person tends to eat less of flavorful food than of bland, thereby preventing overeating.In sum, no one other than a somewhat famous celebrity would have been allowed to publish this book. I picked this up thinking it was a Vegan cook book. It is not. Recipe part = very small. I read the whole thing with a grain of salt, thinking that Alicia Silverstone is an actress, not a scientist, not a doctor. That said, I loved it! I'm on day 2 of her Superhero diet, but already I'm so impressed! The whole grains is the aspect I was missing. Even if it turns out not to work, I love the ideals she puts forth in this book: Diets are not supposed to be mean, or torturous, or turn you into a mean, grouchy, hungry person. No diet is worth that. You need to love your body! You need to nourish your body! You need to be kind to your body! That really rang true to me. I'm really excited to see how I feel in a few weeks. More energy? More peaceful? I can't wait to see!

Great book. Lays out the reasons why people should pursue vegetarian/vegan diets. I was terrified by the environmental implications of a meat diet. As environmental protection and urban renewal enthusiast, it made me feel better about my vegetarian diet. People need to care more about our planet, where we live, and our daily lifestyles. You just can't drive 15 miles to work anymore. My dad is an agricultural engineer, and as I learned from him, the way our food is grown/made is terrible. The environmental implications will be felt for a long period time, and even longer, if we do nothing about it. Also with genetic engineering in crops, diseases could wipe out our entire food supply! That's scary.
