review 1: I kind of couldn't wait to get done this book. It's not written in a way where you read it and are stopped by mesmerizing passages; I was not wowed by the author's ability to write beautiful passages, or lack thereof. I had a hard time relating to the headstrong, independent main character. She's 17, impulsive, angry (for due reason), and mean. I'm not familiar with the Russian ghetto where this story takes place, but the description is enough that reading about it doesn't require you to have previous mental images of the sights and smells. All in all, the dialogue between characters isn't all that nice, it's not that artistically written, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked. review 2: This is one of the best teenage-female-protagonist books I've ever read. It sucked me in to the point I nearly missed a few subway stops. The main character's tale is incredibly painful, but the (first person) voice is always believable and avoids the angsty drama-queen tone that can plague these types of novels. I'm sure those who like The Bell Jar, Dora (by Yuknavitch), and Girl, Interrupted will love this book, but I would honestly recommend it to everyone. less

An upsetting, uncomfortable story with an intelligent, willful heroine. I'm letting it sink in.

Straight forward and engaging. Felt like reading a young adult fiction. New story for me.

This book was an incredible fictional account of the consequences of trauma.
