review 1: I enjoyed reading this book because it was well constructed, well written and a plausible story. We see the world of adults through Emily's eyes (an only child) and the story commences when she is 14 years old. Coping with adolescence, peers, school, adults at that age is never easy and it is well described. She is close to her father but he has an affair with a neighbour. Her parent's split up and his work takes him off to Europe and Emily stays with her mother and her problems. Emily 15, becomes infatuated with a teacher 24, with one of her friends a rival for this teacher's attention and Emily seduces him into an intensive relationship that lasts for quite some time. It was the brazen and naive attitude of this relationship in a school and suburban environment that I t... morehought was the weak point in the story. However the story moves on and we follow her life through to her late twenties. Her parents, neighbours, family, peers, all contribute to an interesting life for Emily and she is of course also an adult trying to find her own place in the world. Alison Espach has written a fine story in her first published novel.
review 2: I've stopped reading this one about 1/3 way through. It's about a 14-year-old girl, 1992, who is WAY too grown up. The kids she hangs around with smoke cigarettes, talk like longshoremen, disrespect their parents and are generally foul. Okay, probably like I was at that age (I hope not THAT bad), but having a daughter that age at home, I don't wanna hear this stuff! The final straw takes place when the kid are on lock-down at their high school and decide to give a girl a nose job. Gave her booze to drink, broke her nose with a book and got out a scalpel. Ick! less

It's just so funny and so sad. So, so sad. I don't know what else to say. The writing is beautiful.

Parts were really well written, but I couldn't stand the characters (perhaps that was the point).

I wish there was half ranking because this is more of a 3.5. Good book, just not amazing.

Some good characters, but story is a waste.
