review 1: It took me a little while to become invested in this story, and whether it was my attention or the way the story was told, I felt confused over the storyline for the first 1/4 of the book. However, once it had my attention, it held it. The story itself is incredible - I had never heard of the kindertransport, and that excruciating decision that parents made is, I think, well captured in the telling of this story. The complexities of morality and humanity are fleshed out to the point where I found myself feeling compassionate towards those I did not really want to: always an unsettling feeling. Pick's talent for storytelling is obvious, and I will seek out more of her work.
review 2: At first the jumps in narration irked me; but really, this is a powerful way
... more to tell the story. So many stories are written of the war and Holocaust; yet so few take this approach, telling the story from a nanny's perspective (who was written very flawed, beautifully, and realistically), looking at an affluent family, and at the fate of one child in particular, sent on a Kindertransport. Very well done, and heartbreaking, and lovely. less

Intense & with a constant sense of foreboding but I'd have liked more detail.
