review 1: I don't usually read action-packed thrillers or mysteries because I'm more of a "Rebecca," "Thirteenth Tale," and "Half-Broken Things" reader, but when I got the chance t read Allan Folsom's "The Hadrian Memorandum" it opened up a whole new genre for me that had my mind doing flip-flops from all of the excitement. I discovered this is the type of drama I could get into for a number of reasons. Besides keeping me intellectually enthralled the story featuring Nicholas Martin (aka John Barron) in a global race from England to Equatorial Guinea, Berlin and Lisbon from a large group of people who wanted a series of compromising photographs, the story was also a chance to look into an issue we're dealing with everyday-war. Straddling the line between reality and unreality the ... moredetail and background information Folsom integrated with the grinding shoot-outs, car chases and other violence gave the book a satisfying cohesiveness I thoroughly enjoyed. Now that I've finished it, and been introduced to the character Nicholas Martin/John Barron, I look forward to reading its predecessor "The Exile" so that I can get his full story.
review 2: This is the third Allan Folsum book that I have read. I really enjoyed the Day after Tomorrow (4.5 stars) and liked Day of Confession (4 stars). As I was reading this book, I wondered what had happened - was this written by the same author? I was thinking that this was a 2 star book. Thankfully, the last third picked up sufficiently to raise my rating to 3 stars overall. I found this book to be too slow with less than stellar characters. It is an average mystery/intrigue novel. less
