review 1: This felt a little more literary and character-driven than a mystery/thriller but too melodramatic and contrived to be just a novel that happens to involve a mystery. It was a really good read. I liked how the mystery unfolded, how we learned more about Carl's character and motivations, how the characters helped each other face their demons. When it got Macguyver-y and violent at the end it felt a little too unrealistic and over-the-top.
review 2: I enjoyed this book. It was a good story and mystery. I never figured it out. And I really liked Joe and Jeremy, and of course, Carl. Joe is a nice guy and good brother, and Jeremy is a sweetheart. I hope the author writes a novel about Jeremy one day. I would have given this book a higher rating if it hadn't be
... moreen for the sex scene near the end. I could have lived without that. But all in all, a great read. less

A respectable debut novel. Good handling of suspenseful elements and a surprise twist near the end.
