review 1: A suspenseful thriller about honesty, family loyalty, seeing people as they really are, and “the truth is better than not knowing.” I admired Max’s self-confidence and drive; she refuses to be intimidated and isn’t afraid to be called a bitch, but she is also considerate and willing to take risks. I liked her easy and platonic relationship with her bodyguard/assistant Jason, though she seems pretty isolated, especially from her family. I appreciated the sexual tension between Max and Nick (a few kisses) and how it didn’t overshadow the characters or plot. I was disappointed that Max zeroed in on key people instead of looking carefully at everyone in and around their circle of friends.
review 2: Intrepid reporter Maxine Revere investigates cold cases f... moreor her own TV show. She takes a break from her investigations to go home to attend the funeral of a childhood friend Kevin who was accused, but not convicted, of killing Max's high school BFF. Although not convicted in court, Kevin stood convicted in the eyes of the public and his life spiraled downward into drugs until he committed suicide. To Max’s surprise, Kevin’s sister asks her to look into Kevin’s death, insisting he did not commit suicide. Added to that, an elderly couple asks Max to look into another murder at Max’s old high school. Old lies and buried secrets in her hometown await Max, along with someone who wants to make sure the past stays in the past. Hard to stop listening (audio). I liked Max a lot better than Lucy Kincaid (another Brennan character); I hope Max is a new series. less
