review 1: What a great book, I just loved it. The author has creat London 1888 where the Steam Baron Council is in control of society. Evelina Cooper has been brought up in two worlds, her magical grammama and as a proper young lady by gramma Holmes. Evelina is the niece of the Great Sherlock Holmes. He and Dr. Watson make several appearances in the story. The ability has that her uncle does not is that she has some magic from her gramma a side of the family. This is the first book in the Baskerville series by Emma Jane Holloway. While magic exists as well as magical creatures the steam Baron want nothing to interfere with their control of London and perhaps the European world. When a murder occurs in the home in which Evelina is a house guest she puts her deductive skills to use ... moretrying to protect her best friends handsome brother and her first love, now a grown man from her former life withe the circus.
review 2: An OK book for a commute or a beach: flat and predictable characters, full of stereotypes. More of a romance novel than a mystery or legal drama. Made me feel cheap and dumb for actually finishing it and liking it as much as I did. Includes many cringeworthy moments, but I did like her prose sometimes. Overall, a good summer read for when you don't want to burden your brain with any more than moving your eyeballs. Better than James Patterson at least. less
