Yesterday I had the pleasure of interviewing five time New York Times bestselling author, Gregg Braden about his latest book, “Human by Design”. He asks some important questions, like “Who are we?” and “How do the stories we tell reflect the reality of our latest scientific discoveries, and how does this new information change our ideas about our human potential?
Here’s the link to the radio interview with Gregg Braden.
Gregg seeks to bridge science and spirituality and the book encourages readers to make a step beyond the binary, either/or thinking about our origins and look at some of the facts. When it comes to DNA and our evolution, science shows that some big shift took place about 200,000 years ago that created Anatomically Modern Humans (AMH). The possibility of this shift happening “by chance” is about as likely as a tornado moving through a junk yard and assembling a 747 jet.
So if Darwin’s theory of evolution doesn’t fit the science, what’s possible? Gregg says that it appears that an intentional act of creation actually produced AMH’s – modern humans – who have the ability to speak and do complex tasks. (I invite you to check out his book for the science and references.) One of the big things that sets us apart is the heart.
We’ve grown up with a societal focus on the brain as the command center of the body and human being. But, the heart actually is the seat of memory and the real command center. Gregg shares an interesting story about a heart transplant receiver – a young girl – who had repetitive nightmares of being chased and killed by a man. The dreams came with the heart. With some investigation, it was discovered that the heart belonged to a young girl who had been murdered by a man. The murderer had not been caught. But the girl who received the heart began to reveal her dreams and especially what the man said to her at the time of her death in the dream. The heart recipient described the man and he was located in the town where the girl (heart-donor) had lived and died.
When the man was confronted about the incident, he confessed to murdering the young girl (whose heart was transplanted in the dreamer) and the man was convicted. This is the power of the memory cells in the heart! It also reveals the connectedness of humanity.
Gregg suggests an easy, heart-centered exercise to help reconnect with the heart and tap into the innate intuition and wisdom found there. The Heart Math Institute’s research provides more info.
Here’s the exercise:
