review 1: This one seemed to fit the genre of something I enjoy, supernatural creatures and a queer story. I had been to Allison Moon's website before and was interested in some of the ideas she shares there and figured I would finally pick up one of her books on my Kindle. The premise is really interesting!Lexie is very much a stereotypical small town girl off to college. I can usually forgive a story when someone goes off to college and starts boozing all the time and having all kinds of sex, but this one did not seem believable to me (especially with scenes of underage college students drinking in public - where is campus security? Even if this is a liberal arts school it seems a little too liberal). Also, if Lexie was as sheltered as the author tells us, why would she automatica... morelly accept her homosexuality? There was absolutely no doubt or wondering, she was just there immediately. Maybe that happens to some people, but it was mostly just told to the reader. The speeches and expositions by characters about feminism were a little absurd and preachy. If the characters had shown their politics rather than pontificated about them, it could have been a more interesting clash. The flowery prose became a little much at times. There was about an incident per page where a noun and a verb would have sufficed but we got a noun and a verb and then an unnecessary simile. As a platform for Moon exploring the politics of feminism, female identity, and female sexuality I think she was successful. However, on its own merit the story was not what I was looking for and one that wants to beat me over the head with the author's ideas. I can definitely see what others liked about this book (and I found the character of Archer really interesting), but it just was not my cup of tea this time around. I would be interested to see some of the author's other works.
review 2: I think it was safe to say that Lunatic Fringe was an interesting read, whether I actually enjoyed the book I am still not entirely sure. It was much more than a simple romance, the characters were well rounded and they grew throughout the book. The discussion of feminism running through the story just gave it an extra dimension and fitted well within the college setting. However,I found the storyline a little confusing in places and was quite disappointed to discover at the end of the book that there must be a book 2 for the story to continue. Whether I will read book 2 I haven't yet decided. less
