review 1: A novel centred on two Jews brought up in well-off families in pre-WW2 Czechoslovakia, and separated early in the War just after their marriage. Each believes the other dead. One becomes a successful doctor in the USA, the other is sent to Terezin Concentration camp. It is a novel of survivor guilt, and of courage in appalling conditions. The part of the book dealing with the pre-War period seemed to me in need of shortening - hence 4 stars rather than 5; but the book really came to life with harrowing descriptions of life in Terezin. The portrayal of how the doctor never came to terms with the loss of his wife is also very moving. I thoroughly recommend the novel.
review 2: This is a beautifully written love story set during the Second World War. I didn't real
... moreize it was going to be a holocaust story before I started reading-- and I've read too many of those and don't want to read more--but it was excellent nonetheless. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that the end was a bit cliche. It's hard to call something like this cliche, yet every reader knew exactly where it was headed the whole time. By no means does that degrade the book though. It's still a lovely story with skillful narrative and engaging prose. less

I like WWII era fiction. I found the story interesting, sometimes sad, but overall I enjoyed it.
