review 1: While this would be to controversial for my school Library, I do think this needs to be added to the public Library. Alex was never told that her gender was undetermined at birth, and her parents made the decision to label her a boy. She just knows she feels more like a girl and her parents seem to hate her for it. The narcissistic mother was so realistic that I actually had to stop reading for a day, just to calm down. Thank goodness for all of Alexandra's newfound friends. She is a great take-charge character, even though it does cause problems.
review 2: I'm a big fan of Alyssa Brugman and in this transgender YA novel, she nails the voice of 14 year old Alex Stringfellow in all its angst, anger, and vulnerability. The mother, though, completely unhinged me.
... moreI like to believe that parents usually try to do their best within the limits of their intellectual and emotional resources, but this woman should never have had the power to make decisions about an intersex child. Compelling reading and a topic that deserves an audience. less
