review 1: This book combines two of my greatest passions: Jane Austen and Egypt. What a fantastic combination! The story follows the adventures of Mr & Mrs Darcy and their six children. The Darcy family with other friends and Mrs Bennet travel for months by a boat to Egypt, where they venture into a hot desert into establish dig. Here they try to find a tomb and vast treasures. It was great to read again about Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, about their great love and most of all mutual respect. I liked the setting for this story. The mysterious Egypt, helps to create semi supernatural atmosphere, with enough hints that an old, ancient spirit is in play.Overall the story is not fast paced. The boat journey takes months and the reader can image the long voyage. Throughout the whole book there... more is underlying feeling that someone or something is taking control and leading the group to it's goal. This book is well written in the Recency style. It is not trying to be a Jane Austen's novel, yet it has enough references to Pride and Prejudice to give the characters enough background information and give the story a light reference to the original. The only part of this story I found confusing was the part that George Wickham played. He did not add anything of value to the overall storyline, and I thought it was strange, that while claiming to be poor, he had enough funds for an expensive trip to Egypt. I was also a little disappointed that Mrs Bennet didn't play a greater role. I was looking forward to see more of her, since she was always one of my favourite Jane Austen's mothers.
review 2: I enjoyed this book, but it was not great piece of literature. If you like Amelia Peabody and you like Pride and Prejudice, you'll probably like this. It had a supernatural element, no Lady Catherine (boo! who wouldn't set her in Egypt?), and a very poorly integrated Wickham plot line. But Wickham does get chased by a crocodile, which makes up for a lot of bad things in the world. Basically, fun and mindless. less

This was... silly. And improbable. And not very accurate, for either Austen or Egyptology.

Did not get past 3rd chapter. Boring, predictable and without the charm of its origins.
