review 1: Don't let the title fool you. There are so many surprises in this story and the title is just one of them! This story is such a great ride and Amanda has such colorful descriptives that she really puts you in the story. Lauren is a young french girl who truly embodies the human spirit. She has faced so much in her young life and just when you think she can't possibly take any more or when you begin to think things are turning around, she gets kicked down again. Whereas some people might give up, she seems to find the resolve to not only go on, but learn from every experience and become stronger for it. Capt. St. Clare is a man with many secrets and never understanding what true love is. He finds it in this spunky, charming young orphan and as their relationship becomes def... moreined, so does his understanding of what true love is. I loved the concept of "The Pride of The King" and the historical detail along with the lovely love story and nonstop drama. Wish there were half stars because I would give this book a 4.5.
review 2: I did end up enjoying this book but for all the significant events packed into it, it had a very slow start for me. I was over 30% through the book before deciding to read the rest. The last third was the best, I thought. There was a -sense- of adventure whereas in the first third particularly there were lot of significant events but I didn't feel anything for them. That said, the characters were well portrayed and descriptions well balanced. I got a good visual of everything without ever feeling like "oh jeez, another page describing the landscape and dresses."My only reservation was that I didn't connect with it all until late into it but the overall plot was quite well done. less
