review 1: De geuren van de Cariben komen je tegemoet in deze roman. Het zijn de vijftiger jaren, op de eilanden Trinidad en Tobago heerst een relaxte sfeer maar een ouderwetse moraal. De slavernij is allang afgeschaft maar in de liefde is de (blanke) man nog steeds de overheerser. Dat merkt Celia, een jonge vrouw die inwoont bij haar tante. De exotische omgeving botst met de harde werkelijkheid waarmee ze te maken krijgt. De vloeiende taal is een plezier om te lezen.
review 2: Great story. I always endorse Caribbean books.... However... I was disappointed with the lack of Creole.... Even the idioms were foreign (out if frying pan into the fire?)... I couldn't identify with much other than the food and places... Also there were a few little things that just did not fit wi
... moreth our culture/history.... E.g. "the seventh grade" , We never used the grade system in Trinidad and Tobago until recently and only in private foreign-run schools. It should have been 5th standard (the local equivalent)Its like the book is about us but not for us less

I liked the writing in the book. I just couldn't get past the predictability of the plot.
