“The Shining Girls” review

Plot: A serial killer travels through time to kill. One of his would-be victims survives, and enlists the help of a former homicide beat reporter to find her killer before he comes back for her.

Review: I love things that are contradictions. And that’s why I love “The Shining Girls,” by Lauren Beukes.

It’s gritty, gruesome, and beautiful. The prose shines, but many scenes are painful to read. It’s a relentless, time-twisting page turner that’s rich in historical detail and description.

Beukes did her research. Each character has a colorful, convincing backstory that compliments the time period they’re living in. Watching Chicago change through the decades is fascinating.

And Kirby is a heroine you can root for. She’s tough and spirited enough to maybe, just maybe win.

Read this book in the evening, sitting by a fire or with a candle nearby.
