review 1: 300 years ago the Reckoning destroyed almost all life in the world. Those who survived vowed to keep the Balance no matter what. That means that those who have a talent are called Illegals and are detained. Ashala has gathered other children like herself in the Firstwood with the permission of the saurs and the Grandfather Serpent who re-created the world with his song. But Neville Rose, the administrator of the detention center, is intent on experimenting on the Illegals under his jurisdiction. Ashala must devise a plan to stop him and rescue the children he already has. I really liked this book and the premise of the Reckoning. The characters were well-developed - Ashala, Connor, Ember, Georgie, Jaz, Wanders, and Hatches. I found Jaz adorable and was so glad that the sau... morers didn't eat him after all. This is the author's first novel and I will definitely read more if she writes them.
review 2: A rare post-apocalyptic story that envisions a healthy world where nature and society undergo a process of rebirth. Laws have been put in place to ensure balance between human activity and the fragile ecosystem. Some children are born with abilities that many fear will upset the balance. Rather than submit themselves to government assessment and possible internment, many run away to join the self-sufficient tribe led by Ashala, a teenager with the ability to change reality through her dreams. less

I know this is yet another dystopian YA book....but it was really good!

Cliché as hell, with a weird structure I found frustrating.
