review 1: I picked this novel up because I was interested in a glimpse of the northeast culture of boarding schools and privilege. It delivered as I was both simultaneously fascinated and turned off. The main character is definitely part of this culture though perhaps not the full embodiment as some of the other characters (Tazewell, Kriffo). More than just a snapshot novel, the story delivers more than a few twists and turns that were absolutely unexpected.
review 2: I'm always on the look-out for a good coming of age story, and I've been fascinated by books that deal with prep school culture. The Starboard Sea fit both of those categories, and it definitely was compelling enough to keep me reading, but I felt it was lacking in comparison to books like A Separate Peace
... moreand Prep, which deal with the same issues. It did deal well with the issues of sexuality and privilege, though. If I could give it 3.5 stars I would, because it's definitely worth a read, it just didn't blow me away. less
