review 1: Brilliant! Boy oh boy. This is one of those books that makes a writer think to herself: why write when a book like this exists? And I genuflect to McKay for writing incredible stories with extraordinary young women and women. This books made my soul stir up with heat and passion and feminist glory. I read it in days...which is a small miracle when you're a writer yourself and a mother of two. I loved The Virgin Cure. Very much.
review 2: I did like this book, and am giving it a solid 3, (3.5 is I could). It was a very interesting subject and the author had wonderful descriptions of life in NYC in the 1870's. I could hardly wait to get back to the book. I am a sucker for historical fiction and Improve learning about this period from the view of a 12 year old
... moregirl. From being sold by her mother to an abusive vindictive woman, to being groomed to be a prostitute, it was a very detailed and well researched narrative. But many of the loose ends were not tied up and it seemed to run out of steam. We go from 12 - 19 in one page, and not a really sense of what happened in between. So 90% of the book was engaging but the end was not up to par. less
