review 1: Really did not like this book. Had a difficult time finishing it-- simply depressing and sad. I could have easily finished this book in a day but it took me two weeks to read it simply bc I did not want to pick it up again. The last five pages offer a sip of hope but I just found the cultural treatment of women BY women so sad and unhappy. I would hope that women would be more loving, more kind and more merciful to one another because they understand the hardships they all must face. Nazia's mother just made me so angry. And the role of the men in this story was pathetic as well. I think that this type of cultural read is important but it was still oppressively depressing to me. Good for discussion of women's roles and issues.
review 2: The wonderful story of 1
... more4-year-old Nazia, a schoolgirl in Karachi whose life changes drastically when her father cannot (or will not) work. Forced to become a housekeeper, she must quit school and learn at the "school of hard knocks." She questions the arranged marriage to a cousin she doesn't know and wants to believe the best about her father, although all the signs point to him being a lying, thieving slacker. Will Nazia stand up for herself or will she buckle under pressure from her mother to make the family proud? An interesting look at a culture most Western students know nothing about. less
