review 1: Heart-shredding sadness abounds in this gorgeously written story of two French sisters of Algerian descent. The older, a devout Muslim, has brought hatred and rejection raining down on her by making the choice to wear a headscarf, resulting in her expulsion from public school. The younger has attracted the tragic and deadly attentions of the fundamentalist Muslim boys in the neighborhood by rejecting prayer, wearing jeans, and playing on the school basketball team. It is a painful reflection on freedom and the struggle to grasp the idea that each person has the right to make their own choices. It is the almost unbearable examination of a surviving sister's complex grief.
review 2: Sohane is totally different than her younger sister Djelila. Even though they ar
... moree Arabic and still uphold the rules of the Koran, Djelila wants to distance herself from the rest of her family. She hangs out with the Caucasian girls on the basketball team and dresses in provocative clothing. She stays out late, drinks and smokes, and all of these things are forbidden by the Koran. Sohane is afraid that Djelila’s actions will get her in trouble because the Arabic gangs in the neighborhood don’t like Djelila’s actions. They feel the woman’s place in the home and not out with crowds. Sohane and her sister get in many fights, but will Djelila change her actions and conform? Is changing the right thing do? This book is a very good book to read, and many issues in this book can be debated with others that read it. I would recommend it. less
