review 1: I wanted to like this book more than 3 stars, but such is life. The story has so much potential--a female astronomer in a Quaker society who grapples with her place in her community, in the male-dominated science scene, and in the world--but it just lacked something. I think it came down to emotional development for me. I wanted to understand her passion for the stars, I wanted to feel the romance and believe it, I wanted to get wrapped up in it all. Interesting storyline, just not as compelling as it could have been.
review 2: Based on the true story of Maria Mitchell, a female astronomer in New England in the early 1800's, this novel focuses on a young Quaker woman whose interests in astronomy as well as a dark-skinned seaman from the Azores turn her Nantucke... moret community on its collective head. Both of these young people are trying to advance their allotted station in life. It makes for a very thought-provoking book--and I would recommend. However, I thought it moved slowly at times. It took the protagonist Hannah Price three-quarters of the way through the book to finally find her voice, buck her Quaker upbringing, and speak up for herself. Thank God, she did. less
