review 1: This romance book is based on the 1840's real female astronomer Maria Mitchel. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. It's not life changing, but it is deeply engaging. Hannah (the Maria character) is up against all kinds of odds over and over again. She is up against women's roles of the day, religious expectations, racial issues, academic issues, and family issues. Some of the nautical navigation sections were a bit too abstract for me. Some other sections were too mathematical for me. But neither of these detracted from the story long enough for me to loose interest in the main character.
review 2: 24 year old Hannah is a Quaker in 1845 Nantucket. She is obsessed with astronomy. She wants to discover a new comet. She falls in love with Isaac, an Azorean
... more whaler whom she takes on as a student. The book is full of conflicts: racial, career versus family, love, friendship. The plot and setting were so unexpected that it kept my attention. Hannah is not always likeable but is certanly intriguing. What's even more interesting is that the story is based on an actual person. Good first book by this author. less
