review 1: Confession: I didn't read every word. But I still learned a lot. At the end of each chapter is a checklist of easy, medium, advanced actions for you to choose from.I already a lot of things she recommends: compost, cloth produce bags, reuse wood from old decking, reuse boxes, reuse mason jars, save water but there are always more things I can do. There was interesting stats and facts. As a result of this book: I look at everything a little differently now and it is frustrating to see so much waste. I can only do so much but I have to remind myself even the smallest things I do can make a difference.
review 2: Probably one of the most thorough textbooks on reducing trash that I have ever read. Ms. Korst examines almost every facet of Americans' lifestyle with cou
... morerage, impressive conviction, and even light wit trying to encourage more thoughtful use of our dear planet's resources. The book once again reminded me that as Americans, we suffer from a ridiculous sense of entitlement and an overabundance of "goods." While certainly we cannot all follow her all of guidelines and suggestions implicitly, so many of her recommendations make excellent common sense. I firmly believe she is correct in that our chldren would benefit much more from time spent with them, than purchasing the latest fad toy shoved down our kids' throats on children's shows on TV (yet another reason to limit and monitor children's TV viewing). I would love to see Ms. Korst write a children's and/or youth, t'ween book on what they can do to reduce waste. Though I do agree that her waste reduction process needs "buy-in" from the majority of a family unit, sometimes we learn quite remarkable lessons from our children, no?I highly recommend this book for environmentalists, conservationists, treehuggers, Sierra clubbers, and anyone with the will to make a difference. It is a very readable book that can be read straight through, skimmed or scanned, and referred to as with any textbook. If you have allergies or sensitive skin, do try her recipies for cleaning solutions; having read cleaning and laundry product labels I've fretted overthe implications of so many probably unnecessary chemicals added to our environment both at home, school, and in workplaces. less
