review 1: Al Pha looks at the world around him and all sorts of things are being discovered and invented. Al wants to invent something too. The king announces that whoever can arrange the letters into what he believes is the best order, they are promised to be remembered forever. Al gets right to work. This books tells the story of how Al Pha made a bet to himself that he could put the letters in order. It describes his journey through each letter and how Al decided to place the letters in the order that he did. Each page is filled with the ideas that popped into Al's mind that influenced his decision and how the alphabet came to be.Delphine Durand's illustrations are playful and bright as they display people, animals, insects, plants that create an excellent visual enhancemen... moret to the story of Al Pha's bet. The colors grab the reader's attention to the action taking place on every page and something new can be spotted each time the pages are turned.I recommend that this book be used as a read-aloud because the text tends to be a little lengthy on several of the pages and can be quite complicated for a beginner reader. Older children, although they may know their alphabet prior to reading this book, will still enjoy the humor that is worked into the storyline.
review 2: Ever wonder how or who put the twenty-six letters together that we all know? It’s not a coincidence how some of the letters are where they are or what letter they are next too. Well in all honesty the ABC’s came to be because of Al Pha who wanted to invent something magnificent. One day the twenty-six letters were invented and the great king wanted the town’s people to put the letters into some type of order. So on that day Al decided that he would do it! He started the day off with A for Al and B for a bee he saw. From then on all the way to Z Al made an order for the twenty-six letters. Which came to be known as the alphabet, all because Al Pha made a bet with himself. This is an absolutely amazing story that illustrates how easily it is to invent something and be so creative. This book allows the reader to really think and perhaps understand how the ABCs came to be in this order. Any child would love to sit and listen to Al’s story and see how unforgettable he has made the alphabet to be. Because of the alphabet we can begin to read books and poetry and write. This book overall can be a great way to introduce students to the world of the alphabet and what it brings with it like reading and writing. less
