review 1: The artwork in this book is unique and colorful much like that of the artist's the story is about. I've always found Frida to be beautiful in her confidence and self-esteem. I think she has certain qualities that would be good models for young girls in today's world. This book is appropriate for young readers because it only goes into her beginnings of becoming an artist and shows her first painting in her style she became famous for. I also think students today could relate to her self portraits being that they are growing up in the world of the "selfie" where they are constantly taking self portraits of themselves.
review 2: Definitely a good aid to lessons for art and art appreciation around Frida Kahlo. This is not the opening book I'd use or the large book
... more with the huge prints of her paintings. It is a good supplement to tell us a small part of her life. I think it's an important book because it attempts to tell us about her coming into her own with her first well known painting and it lovingly, simply explains the iconic relationship she had with Diego Rivera. Her experience in San Francisco will be enjoyed by local NorCal readers. Frida Kahlo's story has so many facets (including what it means to be a woman artist, a minority, an immigrant, an artist during this period) it goes without saying that books retelling her story can open many and varied discussions. The darkly outlined block-like stylized illustrations (although a little formulaic) are colorful and supportive in telling the story. less

I love Frida, but I didn't love this book. It was missing something.
